Since January 2019, I have volunteered with the Damien Center Food Pantry every week after studying the organization in an
experiential learning component of a Philanthropic Studies course. Each week, I work with other volunteers to restock dry and canned goods on the shelves, pack grocery bags for clients to select from, and distribute frozen items, as requested. In addition, I assist in serving hot meals delivered by a local nonprofit, Second Helpings. In volunteering at the Damien Center, I first-hand witness the
intersection between poverty and illness and the challenges the HIV positive patient population faces in meeting adequate nutritional needs, due to risk for weight loss.
