Maternal Mortality in Indiana

Biology Senior Capstone

In the Fall of 2020, I engaged in the analysis of the maternal mortality crisis in Indiana through the lens of multi-sector cooperation. Even though  inconsistent data collation in can propagate inaccurate estimates of actual maternal mortality, I focused on analyzing concomitant social determinants of the crisis. Through compiling clinical and social risk factors for maternal mortality --ranging from obesity, low socioeconomic status, or living in a rural community. Through this work, I also proposed a tentative model for multi-sector cooperation to help mitigate these risk factors for maternal mortality.

In order to share the findings from this research, especially in context of racial determinants, I submitted a Letter to the IndyStar to encourage the general public to vote for policies and candidates that adopt an evidenced-based intervention to addressing racial disparities in maternal care.
