Learning Outcome #1

Philanthropic Traditions

This learning outcome has three primary goals in mind, to obtain an intersectional understanding of philanthropy across cultures and contexts, to integrate historical and contemporary movements to current philanthropic traditions, and to integrate other scholarly disciplines in the study and practice of philanthropy both within and without the American context.  The philanthropic traditions artifacts collectively reiterate the importance of maintaining cultural humility when designing and executing philanthropic interventions. As a future healthcare provider, I hope to act philanthropically to provide medical care in underserved areas under the globe, though understanding that I must maintain an open mind to operate within the local subculture through cultural humility.

Social Entrepreneurship Paper - PHST-P301

My Social Entrepreneurship paper focused on researching the level of civil society in a nation with a burgeoning democracy and a specific instance of social entrepreneurship that interplays with said climate. For this project, I specifically examined the work of Dr. Zeena Johar in founding the organization SughaVazhvu Healthcare to help mitigate the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural India. This artifact points to the “comparing and contrasting nature of civil society and philanthropy across…cultures and contexts” by focusing on India’s reliance on the market sector for healthcare delivery, for example. This artifact is helpful to the story of my ePortfolio overall, which demonstrates the connections between philanthropy and healthcare, especially in targeting an intervention that alleviates the lack of access to healthcare for India’s rural communities, an especially vulnerable population.
